This town is tucked between the Purcell and Selkirk mountain ranges, giving it a natural beauty that can’t be ignored. And with its welcoming community and abundance of available activities, Creston will quickly feel like home. That’s why we here at AM Ford Sales are proud to serve this wonderful community.

History

The Ktunaxa Kinbasket first settled in Creston, using the area as a jumping-off point to fish and hunt the marshes that were created by the flooding of the Kootenay and Goat Rivers. In 1808, explorer David Thompson came through the area, which lead to the eventual construction of the Dewdney Trail, which attracted prospectors and miners.

It wasn’t until 1891 that Creston was officially settled. Over time, the area flourished with the addition of the Canadian Pacific and Great Northern Railways, bringing farmers and businesspeople. Now, Creston flourishes with a variety of industries finding home within its borders, including a strong arts community.

Things to Do

Learn About the Area at the Creston & District Museum

Step back into the past at the Creston & District Museum. This museum, which is housed in a stonework structure created by master stonemason Rudolph Schultz, is a treasure trove of the area’s history. It’s filled with remnants of the past from a replica of a trapper’s cabin and a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse sitting outside on the grounds, to displays of a Kootenay Canoe and an early general store on the inside. The exhibits change throughout the year, so you’ll always learn something new.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Creston is a hub for a range of outdoor activities. Duck Lake is known for its bass fishing, while also offering the chance to get out on the water. You can also enjoy the beauty of our community on the Kootenay River or Lake Kootenay, which is just a short drive away. For hikers, paths and trails are abundant throughout the area, allowing to you walk or bike in the Skimmerhorn and Purcell mountain ranges.
