Wheel Alignment 101: What You Need To Know

Wheel Alignment 101: What You Need To Know

You might not think about your tires very often, but it’s important to take care of them to keep your car running smoothly. One of the most important aspects to consider is your wheel alignment. When your tires are aligned properly, they will perform properly and last longer. But what exactly is wheel alignment? Here is an overview of wheel alignment and how you can make sure your tires are properly aligned.

What is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment is pretty straight forward. It refers to how your wheels are positioned in regard to one another and your suspension. Wheels can easily become misaligned, influenced by multiple factors including road conditions, driving habits and potholes. When your wheels are misaligned, your vehicle can experience a number of problems. This includes making it more difficult to steer, vibrations while you’re driving and uneven tire wearing.

How Can I Tell My Tires Need Aligned?

If your tires are misaligned, there are a few symptoms that you might notice. If you notice one or more of these indicators, then you should bring your car into the AM Ford Sales Service Center for a check-up:

  • Uneven tread wear on your tires
  • Your vehicle is pulling in one direction or the other
  • Your steering wheel is off-center even when you’re driving straight
  • Your steering wheel vibrates

How Will A Mechanic Help?

A mechanic can easily identify whether your tires need aligned or not — and they can also fix them. When you bring your car into the AM Ford Sales Service Center, one of our certified technicians will look at your vehicle’s camber, toe and caster. By looking at the front of your vehicle, our technician can determine the camber, which is the inward or outward angle of your tires; to see the toe alignment — how much your tires turn inward or outward — our technician will take a look from above. A side view of your vehicle helps reveal the caster, the angle of your steering axis.

If the camber, toe and caster alignments don’t appear to be appropriate, our schedule a service appointment and an AM Ford technician will then take steps to fix it, making sure your alignment is the best it can be.
